Home Wine Cellars in Kitchen Spaces: an Impressive Wine Room Conversion Project

A tastefully designed custom wine cellar is an excellent addition to your home. Drinking wine with family and friends is more exciting if you have easy access to vintages stored in a climate-controlled environment.

Arctic Metalworks has been in the construction industry for many years, helping wine collectors transform unused spaces into functional and stylish residential wine rooms. With their expertise in designing and building home wine cellars, nothing can hinder them from exceeding their client’s expectations. They will tailor a design that will meet your aesthetic, functional, and financial requirements.

In one of their projects in Newport Beach, Orange County, they utilized a kitchen space for a build-out project. Challenges did not hinder this team of experienced wine cellar installers from building a wine storage facility capable of preserving the quality of wines. They followed the standard procedures, as they always do, to ensure the wine cellar could function efficiently.

Installing Wine Room Insulation and Vapor Barrier: Why is it Important in Building Home Wine Cellars?

Building refrigerated home wine cellars has technical requirements. The key to creating a safe wine room for your collection is hiring a professional builder. At Arctic Metalworks, they are composed of design experts and HVAC specialists who thoroughly understand proper wine storage.

They understand that excessive temperatures and humidity levels will cause moisture build-up in refrigerated residential wine cellars. Moisture can trigger mold growth in the walls and ceiling, affecting the structural integrity of your wine racks and wine cellar. Moreover, mold can also grow on the cork and contaminate the wine.

To prevent this wine storage issue, Arctic Metalworks installed a vapor barrier and insulation. The vapor barrier separates the warmer environment outside the wine cellar from the colder conditions inside the refrigerated wine cellar. The insulation provides heat flow or heat transfer and lowers energy consumption.

In this wine refrigeration project, they chose closed-cell polyurethane spray foam insulation. It can act as both an insulator and a vapor barrier, so you do not have to install a separate one. Moreover, closed-cell spray foam insulation is proven to be more efficient than any other type of insulation because it can fill even the tiniest gaps between wall studs.

One of the challenges encountered by the master wine cellar builders was the large space between the ceiling and the second floor. In order for them to spray the foal insulation, they had to remove the drywall and put a backing on top. They put back the drywall and painted it to create a seamless and beautiful finish.

Wine Cellar Cooling System Installation by Wine Cellar Builders and Refrigeration Specialists

High-Grade Wine Cellar Cooling Unit for Home Wine Cellars
Installing High-Grade Wine Cellar Cooling Units in Home Wine Cellars is an Expertise of Arctic Metalworks

Wine refrigeration is a crucial aspect of building wine rooms. The correct sizing, placement, and installation of your climate control system will maximize the cooling efficiency of your wine cellar.

Arctic Metalworks always performs a heat load calculation to determine the correct size of the cooling unit for every project. For this project, they utilized split wine cellar cooling units to achieve the ideal temperature (55 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit) and humidity levels (60 to 70 percent).

One is the primary cooling system, and the other is the backup system. Both units have a 1/3 horsepower. Their thermostats were set a few degrees apart, 55 for the primary and 59 for the backup system.

The backup system was a smart option because the homeowners value their wine collection so much. The two refrigeration units are independent. If the thermostat of the primary wine cooling system goes outside the ideal range or breaks down, the backup system will regulate the conditions in the wine room to prevent wine storage problems.

Another challenge in this project was the absence of an external wall where the cooling system could exhaust heat. If there was one, the Arctic team would have installed it in a through-the-wall setup, which involves punching a hole in the exterior of the house and placing the refrigeration unit there. To solve the issue, they brought down the wall to get a line set.

The evaporator was installed within the racking inside the wine cellar and concealed in a wooden grill cover to create a seamless look. Since the condenser is located outdoors, the wine cooling unit offers a virtually quiet operation.

Custom Wine Cellar Door Designed with Elegance and Sealed Correctly

The door has a significant effect on the overall appeal of home wine cellars in Newport Beach. A creative designer will create a custom door to meet your aesthetic requirements. In this project, Arctic Metalworks installed a glass door framed in wood, which complements the wooden wine racks.

To help the wine cooling system maximize its performance, The Arctic team equipped the entryway with sealing components. There should be an airtight seal around the door, especially the bottom section. Cold air stays down because it is heavy, so it is vital to insulate the doors of refrigerated wine cellars, giving more attention to the bottom seal.

Weather stripping was installed around the edges of the door to prevent cold air from escaping the wine room and warm air from entering. A mechanical feature called the automatic door guillotine was also added to the door, which locks the door automatically when lowered. It seals the gap between the door seal and the lower end of the door when closed.

Sealing wine cellars will protect wines from damage caused by temperature fluctuations and varying humidity levels. Working with a knowledgeable builder will give you peace of mind.
